As we reflect on Veterans Day, I would like to explore the concept of reciprocity. If you look up the definition of reciprocity you will find something along the lines of the quality or state of being reciprocal : mutual dependence, action, or influence. This idea of what goes around, comes around is a guiding principle here at edenfeed. A belief that our individual actions and decisions have power, meaning and impact. No matter how seemingly small or insignificant. I imagine every man and women who has ever put on a uniform and put themselves in harm’s way to protect our freedom believed this too.
Norman Cousins captured this well when he said, “Nothing is more powerful than an individual acting out of his conscience, thus helping to bring the collective conscience to life”.
As we honor and celebrate our Veterans today, let’s not forget the sacrifices, big and small they have made for us. We can pay them back in many ways today and every day by…
- Appreciating and valuing the freedom for which they fought.
- Protecting and serving others (including Veterans) currently in need.
- Caring for and supporting their families they have had to leave behind.
- Treating your country and countrymen with respect.
If you are looking to celebrate Veterans Day by donating your time or treasure to an organization serving our Veterans, there are many out there who would welcome your help. In the Tampa Bay Area, I have enjoyed my experience working with The TAMCO Foundation who serves wounded veterans and their families.
Personally, I would like to say thank you to all those that DO and HAVE left their families behind while they go protect mine!! Your bravery and courage is appreciated not only today, but every night when I lay my head down safely on my pillow.
Got a good story to share about your favorite way to honor and celebrate Veterans? Or a story about a Veteran you would like to share? We’d love to hear it. Want to add your two cents on reciprocity? That is welcomed too!
Happy Veterans Day!
